The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) National Remote Sensing Center has “rapidly evaluated” the damage from flash floods in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, which is using very high -resolution images from the Cartosat -2S satellite.
ISRO said, “Comparative analysis of satellite images of 07.08.2025 (Post-event) and available cloud-free pre-event data (13.06.2024) has been detected and severity of destruction and severity,” ISRO said.
The agency stated that the findings include indications of flash floods, including wide stream channels, converted river morphology and human life and infrastructure.
An ISO statement said, “Dharli village deposited the size of sediment and debris fan in the village … Kheer silt and the confluence of the Bhagirathi river. Partial/complete destruction and disappearance of many buildings in the flood affected area, possibly submerged or washed away by intensive soil flow and debris.”
The agency said that many buildings appear to be submerged in mud and debris. “Satellite images will help in the search and rescue operations to reach the trapped persons and restore connectivity for the isolated regions. The incident throws light on the increasing vulnerability of Himalayan settlements for disasters. Scientific analysis is being done to detect the cause of the triggering event,” he said.
