IISER established a committee to examine the circumstances behind the unnatural death of a PhD student

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Kolkata A spokesperson of an institute said on Sunday (August 10, 2025) that PhD has established a fact-khoj committee to investigate the circumstances behind the unnatural death of the student Anamatira Roy (24).

A police officer said that Roy, a life science researcher of the Hringhata campus in Nadia district, died on Friday (August 8, 2025) at Emims Kalyani Hospital, which a few hours after falling ill in the campus, said a police officer.

Drug overdose is believed to be a leading factor for his death, the officer quoted a preliminary report from the hospital.

An IISER spokesperson told PTI On Sunday (August 10, 2025) that the institute formed a fact-khoj committee on Friday (August 8, 2025), so that he died.

Some of Roy’s friends said that before being taken to the hospital on Thursday (August 7, 2025), there was a warm argument with some of its research colleagues in the institute’s laboratory.

The spokesperson said, “We are searching for all angles. The committee is talking to his parents and other family members as well as their batchmates. We are also investigating their social media posts. We will cooperate with the police.”

While the parents suffering from his grief could not be contacted, Roy’s cousin Hrisikesh Roy said that his brother was threatened and pressured on such highly mental stress that he was forced to commit suicide by two persons in his research team related to his research team.

SFI general secretary Debjan Dey said after meeting the bereaved family, “We want a complete and intensive investigation.”

As Roy’s body was brought to the premises after the post -mortem examination on Saturday (August 9, 2025), a rally was taken by some students.

On the basis of Roy’s posts, where he complained of mental harassment and extreme bullying, an FIR was filed by the family at Hinghata police station, naming a guide and another batchmate and responsible for his death.

Roy also informed in a post in the past that he had thought of killing himself when studying in class 6 and even after being mentally disturbed in the last April.

He further alleged another post that email to the Internal Complaint Committee failed to receive any response.

In such a position, Roy said that he was partially suffering from autism and therefore subject to abuse.

The spokesperson said that the allegations of the deceased are being addressed with all seriousness, and the committee will submit conclusions very soon, on the basis of which follow -up action will be taken.

In April 2022, IISER PHD student Subhadip Roy was found dead and convicted a researcher guide.

The spokesman said that IISER has 24×7 counseling cells and zero tolerance for any ragging case.
