According to a local official, six people have been killed after a light aircraft related to a medical charity in Capital, Nairobi, Kenya.
Charity Emeraf Flying Doctors said that the Sesna aircraft flew from Wilson Airport on Thursday afternoon and had a route to Hargesa in Somalia when it crashed and burst into flames at a residential building in Githurai area of Nairobi.
Kimbu County Commissioner Henry Wephulla said that the aircraft killed six people, including doctors, nurses and pilots – as well as one and two people on the ground, while two others were seriously injured.
Investigators have been sent to the scene of the accident to establish its cause.
The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority said that the aircraft lost both radio and radar contacts with air traffic control.
Charity said that there were four crew teams and amref employees.
“At this time, we are fully collaborating with relevant aviation officers and emergency response teams to establish the facts around the situation,” said in a statement by Amref CEO Stephen Gitau.
The Kenya Defense forces and the National Police Service have been deployed at the scene to search and recover recovery.
An eyewitness, Petricia Combo, told the BBC that she was in a cab with her friends when she heard a loud explosion and a red flash in front of them.
“Before I could take my phone to record, the flash had gone and the smoke was running the bill. We then heard people shouting and running and so we ended our journey.
“We came to know that it was an aircraft accident and saw that the trapped hole that was made into the ground,” he said.
In a separate event, a train and a bus, citing a red cross worker, collided at a railway crossing in a railway crossing near Naiwasha city of Central Kenya, according to the Reuters News Agency.
