The Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission (KSERC) has given IT approval for the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) proposal for setting up four grid-scale battery energy system (BES) in its substation.
To handle large amounts of surplus solar energy in the state, BESS units at Srikantapuram in Alappuzha district, Pothencode in Thiruvananthapuram, malaria in Kasargod and BESS units at sub-stations in AreaCode.
The four bess systems will have a capacity of 125 MW/500 MW (MW/MWH) simultaneously, where the MW rating reflects the maximum amount of electricity that can be given at any time and indicates the total amount of MWH energy that the system can store.
BES projects in Srikantapuram and Pothencode will have a capacity of 40 MW/160 MW (MW/MWH), while the people planned in malaria and areacode will have a capacity of 15 MW/60 MW and 30 MW/120 MW.
KSEB has proposed to implement these projects through NHPC Limited, which has been nominated as BES Implementation Agency (BIA) by the Union Ministry of Power under the viability GAP Funding (VGF) scheme for the development of BES systems.
Projects will have to be completed within 15 months of the NHPC signing the agreement with the project developers. However, the Commission has directed KSEB and NHPC to find out whether the projects can be completed before the schedule.
The Commission has also approved the monthly capacity fee quoted by four project developers shortlisted by NHPC.
